The intent of the project was to create a rest area along the heavily traveled highway between Cairo and Alexandria. A site was selected at the main access from the highway to the new “Sadat City”. Accordingly, the complex provided the types of services required for a highway rest area, but at the same time served also as the “gateway” to the new city. This influenced the conception of the axial scheme prepared by SIR Inc. The project included: a gas station, bus station, restaurant, convenience stores, motel, and an exhibition hall sited around an artificial lake and fountain, and surrounded by a park.
